Sustainability

Mining sustainability is a multidisciplinary research area. It adopts an integrated vision of the mining life cycle in order to develop a concrete concept of sustainable mining. This research group covers all necessary dimensions of the sustainable mining concept: economic development, environment, communities, safety and efficiency in the use of natural resources.

Main research areas include environmental mineralogy, identification of sustainability indicators suited for the industry, nanogeoscience applied to recovery from acid mine drainage, climate change adaptation, and energetic and hydric resources management. Priority challenges of mining in the 21st century, such as mining communities, mining legacy, rehabilitation and mine closure, are also a focus of this line.
